"Coriolan" Overture Op. 62 - Study Score - Ludwig van Beethoven / Hans-Werner Küthen
Urtext edition, study score.
The model for the work was provided by the legend around the tragic fate of the Ancient Roman hero Coriolanus. Beethoven was referring to the very popular tragedy of the time with the same name by the Austrian writer Heinrich Joseph von Collin. Yet he only composed the overture in 1807, at a time when the play had long since been taken off the programme. Apparently it no longer mattered to the composer whether his music was played in conjunction with the play or not – and he thus wrote one of the earliest and to date best-loved concert overtures in musical history. The text of the Beethoven Complete edition was carefully reviewed for the study edition and there is a new preface. "Egmont" Overture Op. 84 - Ludwig van Beethoven / Helmut Hell, Ernst Herttrich
Urtext edition, study score, paperbound.
When Beethoven received a commission from Vienna’s Burgtheater to compose stage music for Goethe’s tragedy Egmont in 1809, he viewed it as a great honour. The impetus would have been all the stronger since the drama, about a Dutch nobleman who falls victim to a plot by a Spanish ruler, from the outset provided for music at several points. Beethoven repeatedly declared later on that he had received no honorarium from the theatre’s management, but had written the music “solely out of love for the poet”. The overture became separated from the rest of the incidental music very early on; it was separately published and soon performed as a concert piece independent of the stage tragedy. We now issue it as a study score based on the text of the Beethoven Complete Edition, and with a new preface. "O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort" BWV 20 - Johann Sebastian Bach / Peter Wollny
Cantata for the 1st Sunday after Trinity, composed for June 11, 1724.
Facsimile, in a slipcase. German, English. Johann Sebastian Bach opened the second year of his Leipzig church compositions on 11 June 1724 with a performance of the cantata “O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort”. The work is based on a church hymn by Johann Rist that depicts, in riveting language, the terrors of the Last Judgment and the torments of Hell, followed by an admonition to live a life pleasing to God. The poem inspired Bach to write one of his most impressive church compositions altogether. This remarkably extensive score with twelve sheets sheds particularly instructive and detailed light on Bach's creative process. The Bach Archive Leipzig acquired this priceless manuscript at the end of 2016, making it possible for the first time to reunite the original performance material and the handwritten score of a Bach chorale cantata. Our facsimile edition complements the edition of BWV 20 presented by James Webster almost 50 years ago in volume I/15 of the New Bach Edition. • Autograph score reunited with the original parts • Limited edition of 250 copies • With a Commentary by Peter Wollny (Ger/Eng) A Charm of Lullabies Opus 41 - Study Score - Benjamin Britten / Colin Matthews
Mezzo-soprano and orchestra, study score.
'A Charm of Lullabies' was written in December 1947 for the mezzo-soprano Nancy Evans. Keen to provide her with a work for her recital programmes, Britten was helped in the choice of texts for 'A Charm of Lullabies' by Evans’ husband Eric Crozier, who had recently written the libretto for Albert Herring. The work brings together an anthology of diverse texts unified by the themes of night and sleep and is one of the most genial and uncomplicated of Britten’s song-cycles. Colin Matthews’s arrangement differs in several respects from the original piano version, in particular by expanding it to give it the extra dimension needed for an orchestral song-cycle, and by joining the first three songs, and the fourth and fifth, in effect presenting the cycle in two parts. Orchestra, full score.
Best remembered for his extraordinary advancement of Piano technique, Franz Liszt saw himself in quite a different light: as an innovative composer prepared to move beyond convention into uncharted waters. He and Richard Wagner were allies in Zukunftsmusik, the "music of the future," a new approach that was liberated from all prescribed rules of musical form. Liszt invented the tone poem, and this work is his most famous example. Inspired by Goethe's great verse drama, A Faust Symphony premiered in 1857. The three-movement work musically depicts the essence of Faust, Gretchen, and Mephistopheles, the characters who drive Goethe's tale. Brilliantly innovative and endlessly fascinating in its transformations of thematic materials, the work has influenced many major composers, including Strauss and Debussy, and remains frequently studied, performed, and recorded. This affordable edition was reproduced from an authoritative text and features an informative Introduction by a renowned expert on Liszt. A First Book of Inventions - Study Score - Ryan Wigglesworth

Chor, Streicher Even if Schumann falls back on the hymnbook when choosing the text of his 'Adventlied' (Advent Song), the composition probably was politically motivated and, still under the impressions of the revolutionary years of 1848/49, owed to the longing for peace. The 'Adventlied' (Advent Song), like the 'Neujahrslied' (New Year's Song), is 'a strange mixed genre between sociable, covertly political and religious chant'. Traditional foundations in new tonal splendour - the leading representative of new Italian instrumental music, Ottorino Respighi, transcribed the original lute versions for large orchestra in a masterly fashion. Thanks to his compositional analysis of tradition, Respighi made a substantial contribution to the revival and rediscovery of forgotten musical treasures. The three orchestral suites based on lute settings from the Italian Renaissance and Italian Early Baroque period, however, have not only been influenced by the historicism of later revivals of original texts. Respighi makes the intimate original pieces also shine in repackaged versions for large orchestra, thus achieving wonderful, brilliant sound effects! Titles are: Vorwort Italiana Arie di Corte Siciliana Passacaglia. AQA GCSE Anthology of Music - Chris Fish
